What would you say to your younger self if you could write a letter to them?
‘Dear Child In Me’ is a track in which indie folk singer-songwriter Eyemèr sends love to the child they once were. The song talks about dealing with bullies and growing up as the odd one out. The main topic, however, is navigating the world as a transgender person who gets misgendered on the daily.
lyrics
Boys will be girls
Girls will be boys
Why can't you speak affirming words
My mental pain to you is just
Collateral damage
Something changed in
How you read
We're not on the same page
See other words, definitely
Reading a different chapter
I don't mind
If you don't try
I'll always try anyway
But I can't lie
In my mind
I change the words you say
Dear child in me
One day you'll be
Who you were meant to be
No nasty slurs
In the hallway
Or cobwebs in your brain
There's beauty hidden
In your change
But still your heart
Stays the same
Some added scars
Blood in your veins
Feels yours, not fake
I don't mind
If you don't try
I'll always try anyway
But I can't lie
In my mind
I change the words you say
Do you ever think of the young me
I do
