about
‘Bird, You Can Fly’ is a song Eyemèr wrote a week before coming out as non-binary. A bedroom recording of the song was posted on their YouTube channel in December 2018 and very quickly gained wide recognition. Many people who identify as non-binary, or who are questioning their gender identity, have begun sharing their stories in the comment section of the video. Some have even used the song as a way to come out to their loved ones.
Although non-binary people have always existed, there is still a lack of representation. So much so that the general public does not yet fully comprehend the concept of ‘being neither a man nor a woman’. Consequently, coming out as non-binary can seem very scary and lonely. This is the reason Eyemèr sought to involve as many non-binary people as possible for this song that was written for the non-binary community. In the end of the track, a choir of fifteen non-binary and trans people sing along with the anthem ‘Kid, you’ll be fine. You’re not a girl, you’re not a boy, nor am I’.
lyrics
so the time has come
for your soul to finally belong
stop the facade
though the world is not ready for you and I
you're starting your life
from this moment now
bird you can fly, bird you fly
you're breaking out
out of your shell today
kid, you'll be fine
you're not a girl, you're not a boy
nor am I
